Rinie Van Meurs

Born in the Netherlands, Rinie has been a keen naturalist his entire life. He received his formal education in forestry and civil engineering and then set out to travel the world in search of wildlife, particularly in the polar regions. With approximately 250 expedition voyages under his belt, some 170 of those in the Arctic around Spitsbergen, Franz Joseph Land and Northeast Greenland, Rinie is one of the most experienced European Arctic Expedition Leaders in the world, often employing his expert wildlife photography skills for our photo tours. He has had the opportunity to observe more than 1,000 different polar bears, and has developed a strong affection for the “King of the Arctic” while guiding Arctic expeditions as well as subarctic adventures in Churchill, Manitoba. He has published three photo books on the polar regions: Off the Beaten Track, Polar Odyssey and Polar Impressions, plus a polar bear special, Polar Bears of Spitsbergen. Rinie's photos are used worldwide in books, magazines, calenders and other publications.

Praise from Natural Habitat travelers:

A. Wasselle
“Rinie was very educated in the bear department. He went out of his way to help us locate and identify all polar species that we encountered. He handled all given situations in a caring and concerned manner. A truly professional guide in all departments.”

A. Watts

“He could not have been better! Rinie was equally knowledgeable, equally concerned for us, for wildlife, and for seeing that the photographic emphasis of the trip worked for beginners and experts alike. I cannot praise him enough.”

S. November

“Excellent is an understatement in describing  Rinie. He was absolutely fantastic and provided everything one could wish for. He is extremely knowledgable on the subject matter and yet had a way of presenting it that also made it very entertaining. We would recommend him strongly to anyone going on an excursion to see polar bears."

H. Holdsworth
“Rinie was fun to be with, extremely knowledgeable and very entertaining. His sense of humor and love of the bears made for a very enjoyable experience. I would gladly go on a another trip with him and hope to some time in the future. Hats off to him for a job extremely well done.”

R. Gaskin
"Rinie took care of our needs and offered to help with service every step of the way... from tea and snacks, to teaching us about the bears and the environment and assistance with our daily agenda. I think he should get a bonus for putting up with all of us!"
