Grant Atkinson

Grant Atkinson, a wildlife photographer and writer, is a Nat Hab Hall of Fame Guide, leading small-group safaris to the wildest parts of Botswana, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia. He also leads special-interest photography safaris. South African by birth, Grant is based out of Cape Town. He grew up on the Eastern Cape in a region known as the “Wild Coast,” where he spent his time fishing and bird watching. Observing nature, especially birds, remained a key interest as he grew up. Grant remains an enthusiastic lover of nature in all its forms and has traveled widely in southern Africa as well as to Alaska, India and the Galapagos for wildlife encounters.

En route to his current position as an NHA Safari Expedition Leader, Grant spent 12 years in Botswana where he managed a camp, and the country and its wildlife will always hold a special attraction for him. While there he ran a lion-monitoring project in some of the Botswana’s prime wildlife regions. Among Grant’s special interests are lions, leopards, African wild dogs, elephants, marine mammals, birds (especially birds of prey), fly fishing, boating (he holds an A3 skipper’s certificate) and, of course, photography.

Grant is a regular contributor of text and images to Africa Geographic, African Birdlife and Pix magazines, among others. His images have been on the cover of Africa Geographic as well as National Geographic Kids magazine. As a seasoned photo tour leader, Grant understands that the more you know about your subject’s behavior, the easier it becomes to get good results by anticipating what the subject may do. That’s where his extensive background as a naturalist and wildlife guide play a key role!

Grant shoots with Canon gear but is also very familiar with Nikon cameras. On photo trips, Grant often spends time working with guests who might wish to learn more about the processing of images. He uses Adobe Lightroom, as well as Adobe Photoshop for his own processing workflow and is happy to share all he knows.
