Luggage Restrictions for Adventures

Some of our trips enforce luggage weight restrictions for our guests' comfort and safety. Many of our vehicles have limited space and when traveling in light aircraft, overweight conditions create a serious safety hazard. Baggage exceeding specified limits is subject to being left behind or forwarded to the ending point at your expense. "All carry-ons" includes camera equipment. Please pack lightly and follow the guidelines here and in your Pre-Departure Briefing.

AMERICA

Alaska Limit (Includes Hidden Alaska and Grizzlies: Kodiak to Katmai): 70 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on the floatplane flight within Alaska. If necessary, you may store excess baggage in Anchorage or Kodiak, respectively.

All Yellowstone Trips Limit: Each passenger is limited to ONE piece of soft-sided luggage, in addition to one daypack or carry-on. Keep in mind that for winter trips, baggage storage will not be available, as the trip begins and ends in different cities.

THE NORTH

Spirit Bears & Humpback Whales Limit: 50 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on Pacific Coastal group flights between Vancouver and Bella Bella.

British Columbia Limit: 50 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on Pacific Coastal group flights between Vancouver and Bella Coola.

Harp Seal Watch Limit: 2 pieces of checked luggage on our flight between Quebec City and Magdalene Islands, each piece not to exceed 62 linear inches and a weight of 50 pounds.

Newfoundland Limit: 50 pounds of checked luggage per person on the flight between Deer Lake and St. John's.

LATIN AMERICA

Belize Limit: One checked bag, limit 35 pounds for domestic flights within Belize. Restrictions may vary according to group size and will be confirmed in the Pre-Departure Briefing, approximately 90 days prior to departure.

Costa Rica Limit: 25 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on most flights within Costa Rica. If you are taking a charter flight to Tiskita, the weight limit is 20 pounds per person. Bring a smaller bag for any days that you are traveling outside of San José by plane, as you may store extra luggage in San José.

Panama Limit: 25 pounds per person of checked luggage and 10 pounds of carry-ons, on ALL charter and scheduled flights within Panama. Please plan to bring a smaller bag for the days that you are traveling to Cana. Additional baggage may be stored in Panama City.

Patagonia Limit: 33 pounds per person for checked luggage and 11 pounds of carry-on for all internal flights.

Peru Limit: 66 pounds per person for checked baggage on domestic flights within Peru. Plan to bring a smaller carry-on for camera equipment and other heavy gear. If you are going to Manu Wildlife Center, however, please note that you are limited to 22 pounds per person. There is now a one carry-on/11 pound weight restriction on the train to and from Machu Picchu. The size of the bag must not exceed 62 linear inches (height+width+length). Passengers will be charged for overages. Excess luggage can be stored in Cusco.

Brazil Limit: 50 pounds per person for checked bag on domestic flights within Brazil.

GALAPAGOS

Galapagos Limit: 44 pounds per person for checked baggage on the flight from the mainland to the islands. One additional carry-on is OK. You will have the option to store any additional baggage at the hotel in Quito while you are in the islands.

Ecuadorian Amazon Limit: Depending on your destination, 30-33 pounds per person for checked baggage on charter flights to the Amazon Basin. Please check your Pre-Departure Briefing for more information on your specific destination. Please plan to bring a smaller size carry-on with you for camera equipment and other heavy gear. You will have the option to store any additional baggage at the hotel in Quito during your stay in the rain forest.

ASIA & THE PACIFIC

Bhutan Limit: 44 pounds per person for checked luggage, no more than 2 pieces of checked luggage. You’re allowed one carry-on item which is technically counted as part of the total 44 pounds, but luggage may not be weighed at the time of check-in. Excess baggage charges are approximately $4 per pound.

China Limit: 44 pounds per person for checked baggage on domestic flights within China. Plan to bring a smaller carry-on for heavy gear. Please note that you may be charged for any luggage exceeding this amount.

New Zealand Limit: 44 pounds per person checked baggage on domestic flights within New Zealand. Please plan to bring a smaller bag for the two days that we'll be spending at Stewart Island.

India Limit: 50 pounds per person for checked luggage plus one carry-on item.

Japan Limit: Approximately 33 pounds per person for checked baggage and 22 pounds per person for carry-on baggage on domestic flights within Japan. Please note that these are estimates only and will be confirmed in your Pre-Departure Briefing, approximately 90 days prior to departure.

AFRICA

Soft-sided luggage* is REQUIRED and dimensions may not exceed 58 linear inches (roughly 14x32x12) for the following destinations:

Kenya & Tanzania Limit: 33 pounds per person, not including a small carry-on (must be able to easily fit on your lap), on charter flights

Uganda Limit: 33 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on charter flights

Soft-sided luggage* is REQUIRED and dimensions may not exceed 45 linear inches (roughly 10x24x11) for the following destinations:

Botswana (includes the Great Botswana & Namibia Safari) Limit: 44 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on charter flights

Namibia Limit: 26 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on charter flights for the Best of Namibia Safari or any adventure with a set itinerary not specifically designed for your private group

Zambia Limit: 33 pounds per person, not including a small carry-on (must easily fit on your lap), on charter flights

South Africa Limit: 33 pounds per person, including all carry-ons, on charter flights for our Secluded South Africa Safari only

Madagascar: 44 pounds per person, not including a small carry-on (must be able to easily fit on your lap), on domestic flights

FOR TRAVELERS ON CUSTOM DESIGNED ITINERARIES WITHIN AFRICA, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ADVENTURE SPECIALIST FOR RESTRICTIONS.
While these weights may seem restrictive, please bear in mind that most camps, lodges and hotels on an itinerary will have laundry services available.

*Soft-sided luggage may have handles and/or wheels (with one hard side – often on the bottom where the wheels are attached), but rigid luggage or bags with hard internal frames cannot be accommodated.

Important Note: for guests traveling to Africa there may be additional costs associated with increasing the weight allowance for travelers weighing over 220 pounds. If the weight of any one person in a traveling party exceeds 220 pounds, please contact us as soon as possible.
