Natural Jewels of Costa Rica

Wildlife, Birding and More on Costa Rica’s Finest Professionally Guided Nature Adventure
Costa Rica is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. While the country has only about 0.1 percent of the world's landmass, it contains 5 percent of the world's biodiversity. More than 25 percent of Costa Rica is composed of protected forests and reserves.Braulio Carrillo National Park is a flora and fauna sanctuary filled with tropical plants, waterfalls, and orchid-laden trees. After a drive through the park, you'll board a boat bound for Tortuguero National Park and wind your way through dense rain forest. One of your accommodations is the Evergreen Lodge, nestled deep in the rain forest only five minutes from the extraordinary Tortuguero. From your cabana, you'll have a panoramic view of the surrounding forest and its resident wildlife.Spider, howler, and white-faced capuchin monkeys will watch from the trees as you pass through the Costa Rican forests and mangrove swamps on the Tortuguero canals. "Tortuguero" can be translated as "full of turtles," and the park is considered the most important nesting site for the endangered green turtle during part of the year.Rising 125 feet into the misty skies, the Monteverde Cloud Forest is the most famous wildlife spot in Costa Rica. Four hundred bird species, more than one hundred mammals, and 2,500 species of plants can be found here. Enjoy it all from above, on a combination of suspension bridges and platforms. The very rare resplendent quetzals live in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Their iridescent-green tail feathers, symbols for spring plant growth, were venerated by the ancient Mayas and Aztecs. They viewed the quetzal as the "god of the air" and as a symbol of goodness and light. In the evening from the Arenal Observatory Lodge, you may be able to see a magnificent display of fireworks as the bright-red lava tumbles down the side of the volcano. For more than twenty-five years, seismologists from the Smithsonian Institute and the National University of Costa Rica have been monitoring Arenal from the on-site research station.Tortuguero, the Monteverde Cloud Forest, and Arenal Volcano. These are the jewels of Costa Rica.
