Expedition Whale Sharks

Swim safely with these amazing, gentle creatures, which are really the world's largest fish!
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world, reaching up to forty-five feet in length.Your Expedition Leader will greet you on the first day of your adventure and will remain with you throughout the week. Expedition Leaders are chosen for their expertise in the flora and fauna of the region. After our initial night in Puerto Morelos, we'll drive north to Chiquila, stopping for a dip in a fresh-water cenote along the way. From Chiquila, we'll catch a motorboat to Holbox Island.Upon arrival to Isla Holbox, we check in at CasaSandra, a charming hotel situated on a lovely strecth of white-sand beach. In the mornings, we set off in search of whale sharks, usually found within twenty to twenty-five miles of shore. Feeding near the surface, their beautiful gray-and-white coloring makes them easily visible. To be in the water with these incredible animals is a life-altering experience. The boats used for our whale sharks excursions are 27-foot outboard motorboats which hold appx 8 travelers plus guides and crew. Each boat has a partial sun roof for shade and a small observation perch above the main deck.Summer in Holbox also harkens an amazing migration, when forty thousand flamingos descend upon nutrient-rich waters to feed on the organisms that give the birds their brilliant plumage. We'll visit Isla de los Párajos, keeping an eye out for flamingos en route. On Isla de los Párajos, you can admire birds in their natural environment from a structure of viewing terraces and walkways. We may spot herons, frigates, ibis, egrets, and other avian species. The next day we're back on the boat, ready to slide into the water to snorkel with the amazing whale sharks once again. With your Expedition Leader, you'll be able to swim within arm's reach of the sharks for several minutes at a time. Giant manta rays and bottlenose dolphins may decide to accompany you during your swims. In the afternoon, we tour Isla Holbox using the only means of transportation available - golf carts! All aboard!Reluctantly, we say goodbye to Holbox and make our way back to the mainland. Fortunately, the adventure isn't over - a snorkeling excursion awaits.Near our hotel in Puerto Morelos lies the Great Mayan Reef, where hundreds of multicolored fish live and feed. Some people would travel the globe just for a chance to see a whale shark. As the sun sets on our adventure, we reflect on how magical is was to actually swim with them.
