Grant Atkinson

Grant Atkinson, a wildlife photographer and writer, is a Nat Hab Hall of Fame Guide, leading small-group safaris to the wildest parts of Botswana, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia. He also leads special-interest photography safaris. South African by birth, Grant is based out of Cape Town. He grew up on the Eastern Cape in a region known as the “Wild Coast,” where he spent his time fishing and bird watching. Observing nature, especially birds, remained a key interest as he grew up. Grant remains an enthusiastic lover of nature in all its forms and has traveled widely in southern Africa as well as to Alaska, India and the Galapagos for wildlife encounters.

En route to his current position as an NHA Safari Expedition Leader, Grant spent 12 years in Botswana where he managed a camp, and the country and its wildlife will always hold a special attraction for him. While there he ran a lion-monitoring project in some of the Botswana’s prime wildlife regions. Among Grant’s special interests are lions, leopards, African wild dogs, elephants, marine mammals, birds (especially birds of prey), fly fishing and photography. He is a regular contributor of text and images to Africa Geographic magazine. Grant holds a variety of special guiding certificates, and when he is not in the field, he enjoys boating and holds an A3 skipper’s certificate.

Praise from Natural Habitat travelers:

M. Spiotta
"Grant did an excellent job with our group. He was able to connect to each person in the group and was also able to handle the tougher personalities in the group. He is an exceptional person and made the experience a great one."

A. Herrington
“I can’t imagine a better guide than Grant. He is passionate about the animals and photography, and went out of his way to help us understand the wildlife and how to make the most of our photographic opportunities. He was constantly thinking about how to best position our vehicles in order to get the best photos. I would love to travel with him again.”

L. Vengrow
“Grant was beyond exemplary in every way. It is simply not possible to give him high enough praise. I give him full credit for making this the trip of a lifetime.”

R. Ayers
“Grant was outstanding. Great skill in tracking and spotting wildlife. Vast knowledge of animals and birds and able to explain their habits and relationships with others and the environment. Skilled photographer who helped us all take better pictures. Keen sense of humor who was a pleasure to be with. If we get to return to Africa, we would try to get Grant again as our guide.”

J&L Eagan
“We could not have asked for a better guide. Grant went out of his way to make this an outstanding experience in so many ways. He was very knowledgeable of the animals and environment. His photography expertise was an added bonus as he continually checked to make sure f-stops, shutter speed and ISO were set correctly. It was evident that he loved both what he did and Africa itself.”
