Work alongside children at a local nursery school according to specific needs
Day 1: Serving at Local Nursery School
We transfer this morning from our hotel to a nursery school in the suburb of El Comite del Pueblo on the north side of Quito, about a 30-minute drive. The community was created initially by squatters many years ago and remains one of the poorest in Quito. Many of the children attend school from early morning until late afternoon, since their mothers must work all day.
The school has many needs, and as volunteers we can assist with a variety of activities. We may be doing physical work such as painting walls, weeding and cleaning up gardens, or planting trees. On such projects we’ll work alongside the children, enjoying a chance to socialize with them, or we may assist students in classes such as English, math or computers. Generally, there is a great deal of flexibility for guests to decide which activities they wish to participate in. A translator will accompany our group at all times, though the school is a great setting for any Spanish speakers in our group to practice their skills.
Lunch is served midway through the day, and we have the opportunity to eat at the school with the students, if we wish. We return to the Hilton Colon later this afternoon to spend the night.
Day 2: Continuing to serve
After breakfast, we transfer from our hotel to the school to continue with our service. Lunch in included at the site. Late this afternoon we return once more to the Hilton Colon. On the way back we have the opportunity to drive through some of Quito’s poorest suburbs, and while the living conditions are distressing, we have a fuller context for how helpful our work has been to the families that live in these challenged communities.
Day 3: Transfer to airport for departing flights
After breakfast, a transfer is provided to the airport for homeward flights.

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
