Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Spend an Extra Day in Entebbe with Orphaned and Rescued Chimpanzees
Day 1: Entebbe, Uganda
Upon arrival in Entebbe, you are met at the airport and transferred to the nearby Lake Victoria Hotel.  Dinner is on your own this evening.

Day 2: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary / Entebbe Botanical Gardens
Your day begins with a boat trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Ngamba Island is located in Lake Victoria, 14 miles southeast of Entebbe, in the Koome group of islands in the Mukono district. The chimpanzee sanctuary was established on the island in 1998 after 19 chimps were moved from the Uganda Wildlife Education Center and the much smaller Isinga Island in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Since then, there has been a steady influx of orphaned chimps, mainly poached from the forests of neighboring Congo and smuggled into Uganda for trade. Ngamba Island is now home to nearly 40 chimpanzees, and the integration of these recent orphans into the established original community is ongoing. Watching them is an absolute delight, and it is a palpable reward to know that our visit supports their rehabilitation into their new island community while stemming the impact of illegal poaching.

After lunch this afternoon, enjoy an optional guided tour of Entebbe's famous Botanical Gardens. Established by British colonists in 1898, the gardens today are dedicated to conservation, research and education. The nearly 100-acre reserve is comprised of diverse forest, shrubs, lush tropical plants and colorful flowers, as well as a rock garden and medicinal garden filled with healing herbs that are well known to Uganda's rural peasantry. A kaleidoscope of birds is at home in the verdant environs, and their songs will accompany us as we stroll the grounds. Walk the one-mile nature trail along the Lake Victoria shoreline, or follow a path into the heart of the forest. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your Expedition Leader and meet the rest of your safari traveling companions.
