Volunteer with the Organization for Tropical Studies in a renowned rainforest research center
Day 1: Xandari / La Selva Biological Research Station
After breakfast, take a guided hike on the jungle trails around the lodge, enjoying views of the waterfalls along the way before our late-morning checkout. We stop for lunch before arriving this afternoon at our destination, the La Selva Biological Research Station operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies. Once we get settled into our accommodations, we meet for an overview of OTS, a tour of the grounds and facilities, and introductory nature walk on one of the reserve’s 30 miles of trails. After dinner at OTS, we may have a chance to talk with one of the on-site scientists about projects at the reserve.
Day 2: Volunteer Activities in the Arboretum
Spend this morning volunteering in the Leslie R. Holdridge Arboretum. This sanctuary within the heart of the Caribbean lowland rainforest is home to many of the 1850 species of trees and plants found at OTS La Selva. The reserve protects a large portion of Costa Rica’s biodiversity including more than half its 886 species of birds, and thousands of different species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Our volunteer work within the arboretum may include identification and signage of plants, measuring and recording data, mapping, and maintenance. At all times we will be accompanied by our guide and under the supervision of OTS staff. We'll break for a deluxe picnic lunch in the arboretum gazebo before continuing with our volunteer activities this afternoon. This evening, we enjoy a traditional homemade dinner in a local home nearby.
Day 3: Volunteer Activities / Free Time
We may spend this morning working in the Herbarium helping biologists categorize, catalog and archive samples, or in the Orchid House maintaining the plants through watering, fertilizing, pruning or re-planting. Other volunteer opportunities may be available at any given time and will be decided on a case-by-case basis. This afternoon, you may choose to participate in one of a variety of nearby optional activities for an additional cost. These include rafting, horseback riding, or a zipline canopy tour. After a rewarding day, enjoy dinner out this evening at a local restaurant in Sarapiquí.
Day 4: Depart for San Jose / Onward Flights
After breakfast this morning we depart for San Jose. Guests are advised not to book any onward flights until after 2pm.

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
