Volunteer with the Organization for Tropical Studies in a renowned rainforest research center
Have a green thumb? Or just want to immerse yourself in the stunningly verdant world of Costa Rica’s primary tropical rainforest? Either way, you’ll enjoy an encounter with some of the richest biodiversity on earth during this fascinating voluntourism extension focused on rainforest research and conservation. Work with the Organization for Tropical Studies at La Selva Biological Research Station, a 4,000-acre forest reserve at the confluence of the Sarapiquí and Puerto Viejo rivers, bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park. OTS La Selva is one of the world's most important sites for tropical ecosystem research, hosting more than 250 scientists from some 25 countries each year. Find out what they're working on, explore the reserve and assist with projects in the arboretum, herbarium, orchid house and more.
Our Voluntourism Extensions are designed to enable our travelers to get involved locally in promoting conservation, education and environmental stewardship. NHA does not earn money on these extensions. Rather, local organizations run these programs with the goal being to gain assistance from our travelers as well as some income to help them perform their work. Please be aware that these extensions, while fun and rewarding, may not operate on the same quality level as a Natural Habitat expedition.

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
