Provide positive support through enrichment activities for children in Soweto
Day 1: Arrive in Johannesburg
After your safari concludes, arrive at the airport in Johannesburg and take the convenient free shuttle to the Southern Sun Hotel O.R. Tambo International Airport, not far from the terminal. Dinner is on your own this evening, and the hotel offers a selection of dining options.
Day 2: Soweto Tour / Kliptown Youth Program
Breakfast at the hotel is included this morning. Afterward, our driver-guide picks us up and takes us to Soweto, where we'll have a morning tour of this enormous metropolitan area of 3.5 million people, a collection of many townships that reflects modern South Africa's highly multi-ethnic character. Among the highlights are a visit to the neighborhood of Orlando West with its Hector Pieterson Memorial, the site where the 1976 student uprisings began. Also in Orlando West is the former home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a stone's throw from the Mandela House and Visitor Center, which is now a museum honoring the life of South Africa's greatest political leader.
After our tour, we stop for lunch with our guide (cost not included) before continuing to Kliptown, where we'll have an overview of this historic community and spend the afternoon volunteering at the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP). KYP is a community-based non-profit organization offering free after-school tutoring and personal development programs for the disadvantaged children of Kliptown. Principal programs include academic tutoring for some 380 youth in grades 1-12, including the provision of a school uniform; sports; performing arts and cultural activities; healthy meals and nutrition education; and environmental sustainability. [Please note that after-school tutoring only occurs on weekdays.]
Though South Africa has become a modern country that has officially overcome apartheid, there are still many communities that suffer from great neglect and hardship, and Kliptown is among them. The oldest township in Soweto, established in 1903, Kliptown is ironically the place where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955. Yet in the face of such hope, Kliptown is a community that lacks coverage of most basic needs, such as schools, health clinics, electricity, proper sanitation, etc. As many as 70% of Kliptown’s 44,000 residents are unemployed, and rates of teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS are high.
A major factor in the problems Kliptown youth face is their limited access to adequate schooling – they must walk to schools in other parts of Soweto, and additionally, the high costs of attendance (fees, uniforms, shoes, materials, lunch, etc.) are often prohibitive. It is no surprise in this community of seeming hopelessness that many young people turn to drugs and crime at an early age. KYP is built on the premise that if children’s talents are identified and nurtured at a young age, within a setting directed by young community members who value education, then positive opportunities can be created for an alternative future. KYP’s approach offers an avenue out of poverty, teaching children that they deserve that which they create, rather than being part of a culture of victimhood. Highly regarded within the community, KYP is recognized as a place where children are safe to go in order to learn, collaborate, develop and be inspired.
After a few hours with the kids, our driver-guide returns us directly to the airport for those with departures this evening, or to the hotel for an additional overnight (cost not included) should flight schedules mandate.

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
