Roger Schumann
Roger's fascination with exploring the sea, especially islands, began with family camping vacations at the beach. Surfing, kayaking, diving, hopping from tide pool to tide pool; he learned to love the sea from many angles. As a young man, this passion eventually sent him packing on an 18 month, oceanic walkabout through the South Pacific (as crew on sailboats and by hopping cargo ships) and on to the islands of New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand.
Coupled with his enthusiasm for exploring the sea is his desire to share it with others, through teaching and writing. An American Canoe Association certified Instructor Trainer Educator, Roger has taught sea kayaking for 15 years and led expeditions from the glaciers of Alaska to the islands of Belize. Also an ACA certified Whitewater Instructor (all rivers flow eventually to the sea, after all), he is among a handful of paddlers to run the Grand Canyon in a sea kayak.
Roger gets to share his knowledge teaching semester long, college field-study courses in marine natural history in Baja California, which include extensive training in both kayaking and breath hold free diving. The past several years he's spent many months in Mexico, studying Spanish and leading expeditions in the gray whale calving lagoons of southern Baja. With a degree in literature and creative writing, he's the award-winning author of two books on kayaking and numerous magazine articles.

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
