Chris Starbird

Chris grew up on his grandmother’s ranch in the hills above San Francisco. It was there that his fascination for the outdoors grew to the level that propelled him through biological studies in graduate school. Sea turtles became his focus and he claims that he has spent more midnight hours on tropical beaches where turtles nest then anyone. These long sleepless nights with reptiles gave him an appreciation for human companionship.

In 1995 he moved away from biological research but not before publishing nine scientific articles on turtles and island foxes. He taught high school biology and ran an outdoor program for six years at a private school in San Francisco. As a senior guide for Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) he led trips for eight years up and down the North American continent. He has guided kayak expeditions in Costa Rica, Indonesia, Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico. Chris holds national certifications from the American Canoe and Kayak Association, the American Mountain Guide Association and the Wilderness Medicine Institute. Chris' hobby is racing surf skies for which he placed 20th in the nation at this year’s National Championships held in San Francisco bay.
