This adventure does not require a high degree of physical fitness, though our days generally start early (by 7:30 am) and are very full with activities. In order to participate in every activity, travelers must be able to walk at least two miles unassisted, as well as climb and descend stairs without railings. Our itinerary involves a number of medium-length walks each day, often over uneven terrain, inclines, steps, and forest trails over roots and rocks. Conditions are sometimes muddy and slippery (note that all walks can be more difficult to navigate during inclement weather). Expect uneven terrain with some large step-ups while hiking on old lava flows. In order to participate in the evening lava tube excursion, you must descend a long flight of steep steps after dark and walk 1,000 feet by flashlight in an underground cave environment. Drives may be long, sometimes up to four hours, and many take place on winding, bumpy roads. For those prone to motion sickness, we recommend you have medication available. You must be able to climb up a small set of wooden steps in order to enter our high-clearance safari vehicles at Morgan's Rock. While in the Talamanca Mountains in Costa Rica, you must be able to engage in activities at altitudes of up to 10,000 feet above sea level, keeping in mind that temperatures at that altitude may be quite cold, especially at night. Heat and humidity may be very high in Nicaragua. Many of the areas we visit offer little shade or protection and will be subject to the full intensity of the climatic conditions. For your safety, these activities do require a certain degree of physical fitness, mobility and balance. While all activities are optional, should you opt out of a day’s scheduled activities, we cannot always guarantee that alternatives will be available.
Important Information About This Trip
In our quest to offer the planet's most spectacular nature experiences, we regularly offer our guests the chance to participate in Exploratory Adventures—inaugural trips to select new destinations. These adventures offer an extra element of discovery, as we never know exactly what may be around the next corner, given that these are first-time experiences. Of course, our office and field staff have explored these areas as we create the initial itinerary, but exact routes, accommodations and activities on Exploratory Trips can be – and often are – altered on the fly. Unlike all regular Natural Habitat departures, these special trips may require a minimum number of travelers in order to depart.
