While nature travelers rave about Costa Rica, far fewer visitors know of Nicaragua’s impressive natural features, from active volcanoes and lava islands to old-growth tropical forest filled with jungle animals and wild beaches home to nesting sea turtles. This distinctive itinerary includes a broad sampler
of both countries’ most impressive natural sites, for a less-traveled Central American nature adventure that also includes cultural highlights.
- A Distinctive Itinerary Custom-Crafted for Diversity
Many tour operators offer a standard route through Costa Rica, and few offer trips to Nicaragua at all. We take a different approach, carefully designing an unusual itinerary in tandem with WWF to show you a broad range of wilder, less-visited elements of these two nature-rich countries, with a strong focus on conservation. And we include cultural highlights, too, such as colonial Granada, ancient rock art sites and a visit to a handcrafted hammock workshop.
- The Smallest Groups for the Most Authentic Nature Encounters
Our group is limited to just 10 guests. Whether we’re looking for birds in the cloud forest, listening to monkeys in the rain forest or watching crocodiles slink into the water from a riverbank, we have a wholly different experience of the natural world than travelers on a motorcoach who are sharing such wonders with 30 or 40 other people.
- Secluded Ecolodges Immerse You in Nature
Off the typical tourist path, our remote accommodations provide a direct and personal experience of surrounding nature and wildlife. In Costa Rica’s Talamanca Mountains, for example, we stay at Savegre Mountain Lodge, tucked into a tranquil cloud forest clearing where we’ll have a chance to see the resplendent quetzal, revered by many as the world’s most beautiful bird, among a host of avian endemics. Another highlight is San Juan de la Isla, located on Santo Domingo Beach on Lake Nicaragua with magnificent views towering volcanoes.
- Explore the Sarapiqui River on a Private Boat Cruise
The Sarapiqui River basin shelters some of the best-preserved premontane rain forest in Costa Rica, making it an outstanding ecotourism destination. We enjoy a private boat tour on the river, with close-up views of the exuberant flora and fauna along the riverbanks. We’ll have opportunities to observe monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, caimans, sloths, otters, toucans and a wide diversity of other birds in their verdant tropical habitat, all with expert interpretation from our own naturalist Expedition Leader.
- Relish a Rare Stay at Morgan’s Rock
Morgan's Rock is a hidden gem for nature lovers, a peaceful retreat on a secluded stretch of Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast. Private ocean-view bungalows are perched above a beach where sea turtles nest year-round, and the 4,000-acre nature reserve surrounding the ecolodge, which is home to prolific wildlife, offers lots of trails for exploring. A large working farm on the premises is committed to sustainable organic agriculture, and roughly 60 percent of the food prepared at Morgan Rock is provided on the premises. Guests are welcome to help collect eggs or milk cows.
- Travel with the Finest Naturalist Guides
Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the world's top naturalist guides. This is so important in places like Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where spotting wildlife in lush mountain forests requires finely honed skills. Rather than using less-qualified local lodge guides at each stop, or a single driver-guide as a trip escort, our highly trained NHA Expedition Leaders personally escort our groups from start to finish. Each averages nearly 20 years' experience and receives exclusive resources from WWF's leading scientists. See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
