Exploring Alaska's Coastal Wilderness

An Intimate Exploration of the Magnificent Inside Passage of Alaska
Where can you wake to the cry of a bald eagle, observe lunge-feeding whales, and watch from close by as tons of ice thunder down from the face of a glacier? Only on Alaska's Inside Passage on a nimble expedition ship.Small ships are the best way to explore the Inside Passage. Since 1982, the M/V Sea Lion and M/V Sea Bird have have taken an intimate number of guests to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. For example, at Tracy Arm, a twenty-two-mile-long fjord, rushing waterfalls cascade from towering, glacially carved walls. By smaller Zodiacs, you'll get even closer to this wild coast.Your skilled captain and crew will keep you in close proximity to wildlife. These waters are prime areas for killer and humpback whales and orcas. Often, you'll see sea lions dozing on the rocks.Graceful and magnificent, humpback whales travel great distances to take advantage of the best breeding grounds and feeding spots. North Pacific humpbacks mate and give birth in Hawaii and then travel to Alaska each summer to feed.As you head toward LeConte Bay, you'll have a good chance of seeing humpback whales. You'll also have an opportunity to kayak along the coast — and amid the ice. You'll get deep into the true character of the Alaska wilderness on forested trails. Your Expedition Leader, an expert on the area's nature, will take you on guided walks. The advantages of a small, nimble ship become apparent when you stand on deck and watch a pod of whales feedig right off the starboard bow. But when cruising the Inian Pass, also keep an eye out for playful sea otters.Alaska has more than 98 percent of the U.S. population of brown bears. Biologists attribute the heavy bear densities along the temperate southeastern coasts to a rich food supply of berries and salmon. A visit to Tidal Inlet may bring the sight of brown bears fishing in the water or lumbering up a hillside.Your small, expedition ship allows you the flexibility to travel Alaska's Inside Passage in a relaxing and comfortable way …… yet still make shore landings to isolated areas covered in swaths of wildflowers and old bear tracks. As you disembark in Sitka, southeastern Alaska's only oceanfront town, dozens of bald eagles will often escort you. As more eagle faces gaze at you from Sitka's totem poles, it will come home to you why this place has been home to so many different cultures for thousands of years.
