National Geographic Orion

Technically and aesthetically, the National Geographic Orion is among the most sophisticated vessels in its class. Constructed by one of the world's leading shipbuilders, Cassens Shipyard in Emden, Germany, and launched in November 2003, Orion boasts a host of advanced design features including technology that sets new standards in sustainable marine environmental practices. Although custom-made for expedition cruising, Orion is the epitome of elegance. No expense has been spared when it comes to the quality of fittings and furnishings, and the range and caliber of onboard recreational facilities are nothing short of five-star. Orion's luxurious appointments means she is more mega-yacht than cruise ship. Guest capacity numbers approximately 100 guests, all cared for in intimate, 5-star comfort by a crew of 75.

Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands

The ultimate Southern ocean experience, this expedition takes you into majestically spectacular wildness. Not even the vast migrations of Africa can rival the awesomeness of seeing a king penguin colony of tens of thousands of individuals stretching as far as the eye can see. Or albatross colonies that fill the windward edges of the remote islands they call home. You’ll have other rare sightings here too: massive, in both senses of the word, herds of elephant seals: and a wandering albatross stretching its 11-foot wings. It’s the impossible beauty of Antarctica exponentially increased by unimaginable numbers of animals. A not-be-missed polar experience, for those with the luxury of time.

Please note the following itineraries start and end in Santiago, Chile:

South Georgia & the Falklands

If the epic stories of discovery, endurance and polar explorers like Shackleton, or the sheer magnificence of ice-capped peaks don’t grab you, the wildlife certainly will: penguins (king, Gentoo and macaroni), sea lions, fur seals and enormous elephant seals cozy up to these shores. Only here on South Georgia can you observe one of the world's great wildlife spectacles: literally, 200,000 king penguins on a single beach. This is the expedition for wildlife or photography enthusiasts, or for those who have already been to Antarctica and want more.

South Georgia In-Depth

The Falkland Islands and South Georgia are the jewels of the South Atlantic Ocean. These incredibly remote and wild islands are home to an abundance of wildlife. The Falkland Islands has a rich and storied history, while South Georgia has rightly been called ‘the most staggering wildlife show on earth’. After our in depth exploration, we are certain you will agree. This seldom-visited corner of the planet is a place we know intimately and look forward to visiting every season.

Falkland Islands, South Georgia & Antarctica

This is our most far-reaching polar expedition itinerary and includes visits to three different locations. There are penguin rookeries with more than 100,000 nesting birds and the beaches are covered in fur seals and elephant seals. Seabirds, including many of the albatross species call these islands home, nesting and raising their young in this wild and remote environment. Icebergs in all shapes and sizes fill the waters, and yet more unique wildlife can be found living in sizable colonies. The waters are full of life and we frequently encounter whales including humpback, minke and orca. This particular departure starts with a short, 90-minute flight from South America to the Falklands Islands where you embark the ship. This saves us almost two days of sea crossings. On this voyage we experience all of the classic highlights but in a shorter amount of time compared to the 18 and 19 night variations of this much-loved itinerary.

Antarctica & the Falkland Islands: Seabirds and Penguins

As the short Antarctic Summer approaches, wildlife activity is beginning to reach fever pitch. The huge penguin rookeries are a hive of activity. Nests have been re-established after winter and anxious parents carefully guard precious eggs and feed brand new chicks, some only days old. On this voyage our aim is to see as many as eight different penguin species.Elsewhere, cormorants, gulls and skuas are also busy tending their nests and welcoming the arrival of their newborn. We also anticipate great encounters with various seal species and migrating whales as they arrive to feed in the nutrient rich waters. We make daily excursions ashore with our expert guides and enjoy a great range of activities. Walks and hikes to places of incredible natural beauty, visits to wildlife colonies, historic huts and science stations are just some of the activities on offer. Adventure seekers will also revel in this exciting expedition, timed for the emergence of the short Antarctic Summer –a beautiful time of the season to visit.

Antarctic Peninsula, Weddell Sea & the Falkland Islands

This exciting expedition, which includes flights, provides great diversity and will appeal to those seeking a truly comprehensive Antarctic experience. It includes visits to the South Shetland Islands, the western and northern sections of the Antarctic Peninsula, the stunning and wild Weddell Sea region located on the eastern side of the Peninsula, and the historic location of Elephant Island –a place forever connected to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance expedition 100 years ago. Adding to the experience will be a visit to several locations in the Falkland Island archipelago –home to nesting albatross and the colorful King penguin.

Antarctica Epic: In-Depth Combination Voyage

This exciting new expedition has been many years in the making. It is undoubtedly the most comprehensive journey to Antarctica ever offered. Only scientists and researchers, who spend many months working at the numerous research stations in Antarctica, can claim to spend more time ‘down on the ice’. This unique experience links two existing voyages to create one‘super adventure’. Over the course of three weeks, we spend an unprecedented 16 days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands, the spectacular, icy Weddell Sea region and the wildlife-rich Falkland Islands. Our January and February departures will also journey below the Antarctic Circle –providing yet another amazing highlight! In practical terms, this voyage will provide you with more than THIRTY off-ship excursions.
