Grizzlies: Kodiak to Katmai

A Private Ship-Based Adventure into Remarkable Wild Grizzly Habitat
This specialized bear adventure is considered one of the most exciting nature expeditions on our planet, bringing us to some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable and within close distance of captivating grizzlies! Our accommodations in Kodiak are located across from picturesque St. Paul’s Harbor, in the center of town. © Marion OwenEnjoy a day exploring the areas around Kodiak Island on foot and by boat, where we may see whales, puffins and sea lion rookeries. © Marion OwenAfter time spent on Kodiak Island, we board our floatplane which takes us to the Katmai coast. Our private ship, with its low draft, is a converted tug boat/research vessel that is perfect for this type of unique, shallow-water exploration.Remote Katmai National Park is inaccessible by car. It is not uncommon to see dozens of bears in a single day.Katmai National Park was undeveloped by the park service until 1950. Its remoteness and untraversed nature has helped it remain the perfect grizzly habitat.Grizzly bears in this area are active both day and night and could be anywhere. Our Expedition Leaders work in conjunction with the local rangers to put our small groups in the best viewing spots. While in Katmai National Park, your small group may travel ashore by skiff and explore the tidal flats on foot.It is not uncommon on these outings to see mothers and their small cubs. The average age of a female brown bear who successfully raises her cubs all the way to weaning is eight years. This unique trip is made especially poignant because our Expedition Leader is among the most knowledgable bear experts in the world, with deep knowledge of individual animals in this region. The scenery itself is astounding!Close encounters of a very special kind!In this remote wild area, we sometimes have the rare and special opportunity to see wolves. (C) K. PatteeWe may even have the chance to observe interactions between the wolves and the bears.Of course in any remote area of Alaska we are bound to find other wildlife such as bald eagles, wolves, whales and moose.Kodiak Island and Katmai National Park are a primeval wilderness, home to over two thousand bears. Seeing them at eye-level is a rare bear adventure!
