Canyons of the Southwest

Off the Beaten Path in Grand, Bryce & Zion Canyons
Bryce Canyon National Park's famous red spires are called "hoodoos" and are one of its many fascinating geological features. The canyon is extremely diverse with three distinct climactic zones. There are more than a hundred bird species, dozens of mammal species, and over a thousand plant species.Explore winding trails on the canyon floor...and soak in a sweeping view of Queen's Garden from this overlook.Remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the hot sun in this arid environment. One of the only accommodations within the park is Bryce Canyon Lodge. It was built in the 1920s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In Zion National Park, our Expedition Leader will show you sites often missed by casual tourists. While not physically demanding, short day hikes will reveal hidden slot canyons and other geologic marvels.Of course, the Grand Canyon is justifiably one of the world's most famous geological attractions with its many hues and tints of color. Bring an extra memory card for your camera! The canyon may seem relatively lifeless at first glance, but a closer look reveals a panoply of interesting creatures. Here, a lone condor, only one of sixty remaining in Arizona, relaxes on the edge of a precipice.By focusing on the less-visited North Rim of the Grand Canyon, you'll avoid the crowds and be free to immerse yourself in one of nature's most spectacular creations.Just sitting, relaxing, and absorbing the sheer beauty is worth the price of admission. But you'll do more than that — you'll explore high and low. Information in your Pre-Departure Briefing packet suggests bringing a day pack and comfortable shoes.Your small group will take plenty of well-deserved breaks along the way so you can get the most out of your Canyons adventure! Cheers! The Grand Canyon Lodge is a National Historic Landmark that offers seclusion, peace, and comfort to the North Rim visitor.President Teddy Roosevelt said of the Grand Canyon: "Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American should see."The desert is a harsh environment. Plants like the beavertail cactus make the dry, rocky, desert slopes their home against steep odds. For an authentic, quintessential Grand Canyon experience, see it the traditional way — atop the back of a mule!Come to the canyons of the Southwest, and see the desert come to life in big ways — and small.
