A Small-Group Exploration of the Planet's Most Unique Biodiversity Hotspot
Madagascar is indeed a world apart. Its rain forests are home to diademed sifakas, indri and tenrecs, while baobabs and pachypodia punctuate its desert landscapes. Curious about those exotic-sounding names? For even the best-traveled nature lover, Madagascar offers a kaleidoscope of discoveries. It's no wonder WWF has chosen it as a priority place—more than 80 percent of the island's rare and intriguing plants and animals, including more than 100 different varieties of lemur, exist nowhere else on Earth. There is no better way than with a small group to experience this living time capsule that broke away from the super-continent more than 100 million years ago. Discover a "lost world" you never knew existed as you experience individual close-up encounters with some of the planet’s most unusual species.
Across Madagascar, view a wide variety of fascinating lemurs—a rare encounter with these primitive primates found only on this isolated island
Explore four distinctly different national parks, plus the private Anjajavy nature reserve, accessible only via our exclusive flight into a private airport
Maximize time in Madagascar’s wild areas—and minimize long dusty drives—via chartered flights that ensure timely, comfortable travel linking areas otherwise hard to connect
Our Madagascar Adventure Is a Standout in an Outstanding Land!
When it comes to unique destinations for nature adventures, it's tough to top Madagascar. Some 80 percent of its intriguing plants and animals exist nowhere else on Earth. To truly discover this island continent requires the smallest of groups, as well as exclusive transportation and other trip features that are missing on most organized tours. Take a look at what sets Nat Hab’s Madagascar journey apart:
Our Itinerary Maximizes Your Time in Nature Most people who visit Madagascar do so just once in their lives, so it’s important to get the most out of each day. Compare itineraries carefully: On other Madagascar trips, you may lose several (or many) days traversing the country on long drives or spent hours lounging on beaches. There’s nothing wrong with sitting on a beach, but when you travel to Madagascar with Nat Hab, you’ll spend the bulk of your time in the riveting wild places that make the world’s fourth largest island so fascinating. By including chartered flights, rather than spending tiring days in buses, we access a greater selection of rarely visited areas, reveling in wildlife encounters found nowhere else on Earth.
A Very Small Group (Just 10-11 Guests!) Ensures Authentic Wildlife Encounters
Quiet, wondrous wildlife encounters are always more likely to occur in the presence of fewer people—and they're impossible with groups of 20 or more travelers. We explore Madagascar with no more than 10 or 11 travelers—likely the smallest group you'll find—ensuring a personal experience in nature.
Chartered Flights Keep Hassles at Bay
When other companies include flights, they typically utilize the national carrier, Air Madagascar, an airline with one of the worst reputations for delays and cancellations. The unfortunate truth is that travelers booked on Air Madagascar can sometimes wait a full day or more in airports, or be re-routed in a manner requiring a 24-hour drive on very poor dirt roads. To avoid this exceedingly unpleasant experience, and to be certain we don’t waste our valuable days in Madagascar, we arrange our own private chartered flights. This is a big commitment, but it ensures we get where we want to be in a convenient and timely manner, so you don't lose out.
Unique Accommodations Close to Nature—Including Anjajavy Lodge
We emphasize secluded lodging with stays on private reserves and inside protected national parks. From bungalows tucked within lush rain forest to your own eco-villa on a nature reserve accessible only by private airstrip, we focus on intimate natural settings. Anjajavy Lodge is a special highlight: Madagascar's only Relais & Chateaux property (a 4-star establishment by European standards), its guests have access to more than 17,000 acres of private reserve containing some 1,800 floral species and a multitude of rare wildlife. At Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, our private estate stay includes a visit to its small lemur preserve, where we often get very close to Madagascar’s famous icons.
Window Seats for Everyone
During our wildlife drives, we make sure every guest enjoys access to an unimpeded view. The private 4x4s we charter have five cushioned passenger seats—one in front next to the driver, followed by two rows of two seats each—though we limit our capacity to just four travelers in each vehicle for maximum comfort, viewing and photo opportunities. On our private coach drives, everyone has a window seat along with an average of two seats per traveler, allowing ample space for cameras and gear.
Explore a Biodiversity Hotspot Before the Rest of the World Gets There Nat Hab is one of few tour operators offering naturalist-guided trips to this most distinctive destination. And our itinerary is as diverse and uncommon as this land itself. We explore dense highland rain forest, wander through moss- and lichen-laden cloud forest and plumb arid canyons. On the Indian Ocean coast, search for rare frogs and geckos on night walks, spot several varieties of endangered lemurs in forests, and scan coastlines for pods of dolphins and migrating whales. With Nat Hab and WWF working together to create this unique itinerary, you won’t find a more comprehensive nature-focused adventure!
