Great African Primate Expedition

A Rare Opportunity to Sit Among Families of Endangered Mountain Gorillas
Uganda is home to almost half of the world's seven hundred mountain gorillas. On this adventure, you'll have the very rare opportunity to sit among a family of them. The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home for approximately forty orphaned chimpanzees. This is an optional pre-trip extension. You can start your journey into the world of African primates by observing these otherwise elusive animals in a natural environment — while helping in their rehabilitation.Chimpanzees in the wild are on the brink of extinction. Their habitat is vanishing at an alarming rate due to deforestation by hardwood logging companies. Like humans, chimpanzees are intelligent, social beings who who have close family bonds, use tools, and even engage in warfare against one another. You'll take a walk in the Kibale Forest for more primate encounters. You may see chimpanzees; red colobus, black-and-white colobus, and redtail monkeys; gray-cheeked mangabeys; and other primate species at close range.Queen Elizabeth National Park is a biosphere reserve under UNESCO auspice. The eight-hundred-square-mile park forms one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa. Hyenas, waterbucks, lions, leopards, Uganda kobs, elephants, and the largest concentration of hippos in the world live within its borders.Elephants are a particularly prolific species in the park, with a population of around 3,000.Waterbucks inhabit areas that are close to water in savanna grasslands, gallery forests, and riverine woodlands. The long grasses provide sustenance and a place in which to hide from predators. The waterbuck is mainly sedentary and territorial. Young males form bachelor herds; as they get older, they become more attached to their land and less attached to the herd. The park’s remarkable hippo population is best experienced on a boat cruise down the Kazinga Channel. Buffalo can be seen alone or in larger herds on game drives in the park, and frequently along the shores of the Kazinga Channel during our launch trip. The Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions. These cubs have only managed to scale a termite mound! Our comfortable four-wheel drive vehicles take us from forest to mountain as we keep an eye out for elephant, leopard and lion.Your base for gorilla trekking is the remote Gorilla Forest Camp, a permanent, luxury tented camp nestled in a mist-swathed rain forest. You'll be on a mountainside, situated right in the heart of Bwindi National Park. The pinnacle of your journey will be the gorilla trek through the "Impenetrable Forest" with your expert guide. You'll look for broken and torn vegetation, stripped bark, and chewed leaves — all indicative of a gorilla's resting and feeding areas. With luck, you'll reach the gorillas by mid-day. Your guide will then signal for silence, and you'll proclaim your peaceful intentions to the gorillas with amiable grunts. "Uh. Uh. Uh."You'll sit for a while with the family, watching the young playing in the trees, mothers carrying babies, and — perhaps most impressive — the mighty silverback watching over them with you. You have been allowed entrance into a very special universe! These families of gorillas are habituated to humans and are usually very comfortable with our presence, allowing for incredible photo opportunities. Your time in the physical presence of the gorillas will end too soon, of course. As your adventure nears its close, a charter flight will take you back to Entebbe …… however, the thrill of meeting mountain gorillas in their world will continue to touch your life forever.
