In 1960, a 26-year-old Englishwoman named Jane Goodall arrived on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania in the area now known as Gombe National Park. She was sent there by famed anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey to study the behavior of the local chimpanzee population. Armed only with a notebook and binoculars, she would revolutionize scientific perceptions of what it means to be human with her groundbreaking discoveries that chimpanzees make and use tools, eat meat and exhibit aggression much like we do. Today, nearly 50 years later, the research program Dr. Goodall began continues and is one of the longest uninterrupted studies of a wild animal species.
As the official travel partner of the Jane Goodall Institute, Natural Habitat Adventures is proud to offer a unique opportunity to celebrate Dr. Goodall’s remarkable career and the 50-year Gombe research effort: a series of special commemorative safaris offered through the Jane Goodall Institute’s Jane’s Peak Society. A select group will embark on an unprecedented adventure to remote sites most tourists never see while tracing the path of Dr. Goodall’s career—from the Serengeti plains to the tropical dry forest of Gombe.
During the safari, you will be accompanied by a member of the Jane Goodall Institute’s staff and hosted by Sebastian Chuwa, a conservationist and a local group leader from Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program. Sebastian is a legendary conservationist in Tanzania in his own right for his efforts to bring the rare ebony tree back to the prominence it lost due to deforestation. His intimate knowledge of his home in northern Tanzania, as well as the career of his mentor Dr. Goodall, will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our travelers.
